Nelson NZ Police Vigil

Here is video footage and news coverage of the Nelson police community vigil. This is my experience of being there to support my loved one.

As the police officers walked onto the Cathedral steps, the large crowd started clapping. We kept clapping for several minutes as the police officers stood in front of us, many of them in tears. There was a profound sense of love and connection that cannot be described in words.

It rained throughout the vigil. Most of us in the crowd closed our umbrellas and stood in the rain in unity with the officers standing in front of us. They work in the rain while on duty.

Standing on the steps behind the police officers were the 'firies' (firemen and women) and 'ambos' (ambulance crew). Those are the affectionate police terms for their emergency colleagues, who stood behind them last night in solidarity.

Songs were sung, speeches said, as we stood in the rain - the crowd and the police officers united in grief over the incomprehensible senseless death of Senior Sargeant Lyn Fleming.

Lyn's son and daughter stood with the officers in a show of immense bravery. Lyn's daughter was wearing her mother's pounamu.

Every New Zealand police officer is given a Maori pounamu pendant at their graduation ceremony to celebrate their achievement. All officers wear their pounamu proudly, and rightly so.

At the end of the vigil, the crowd parted and the police officers marched down the main street as we clapped. People shook their hands and called out 'Thank you' and 'We love you...'

Last night's vigil was a tremendous outpouring of love from our community to the grieving police officers. The vigil cannot undo the evil perpetrated in our peaceful town in the early hours of 1st January 2025. But it was a powerful demonstration that love and unity consciousness prevails. Dark to Light.

Lyn would have been so proud of her team last night.

Aroha.

Love and Light

    3. Thank you Betsie. I had never thought about her contacting me. I was pondering it then wandered off to do something and completely forgot to respond to your comment...! I have, understandably, been very distracted for the last few days. I am finally starting to get grounded again. Love and Light to you - and a happy PEACEFUL New Year.
